The Inland Waterway
Approximately 40 miles long, the Inland Waterway is Michigan’s longest chain of lakes and rivers. Water flows from Pickerel Lake, Crooked Lake, Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullett Lake, Cheboygan River, and finally to Lake Huron. The Inland Waterway can accommodate boats up to 65 feet long with an 18-foot beam and up to a 5-foot draft. The Crooked River section is more comfortable navigated by boats 25 feet and less. Day trips to the many sand bars located along the way are popular on warm summer days. Pontoon and Jet Ski rentals are available from several local businesses. There are many public and private boat launches along the way. Gas stops are no more than 10 miles apart. Both the Crooked and Cheboygan River have functioning lock systems, check ahead for schedules. For more specific information on each lake please visit their separate pages.
